How to Make Your Boring Clothes Cute
•Posted on August 29 2024
It's happened to all of us at least once: you open your closet, and you stare at it for a few minutes. It's stuffed to the brim, but...you've got nothing to wear. All your clothes are boring, and you just hate them. But you can't keep buying new clothes, so what can you do? Make your boring clothes cute, of course! It's easier than it sounds to transform your old clothes into new ones. You just need some time, some creativity, and a little sprinkle of DIY magic.
1. Put A Cute Bow On It!
Bows, bows, bows, bows, BOWS! They're everywhere, they're on everything, and we LOVE it. Not only is it super trendy, but it's a really cute look and an easy way to update your clothes. More importantly, it's super easy to DIY already existing clothes and accessories. All you need to know is how to make a bow.
Shoes
If your shoes are basic and boring, making them cute can be as easy as swapping out the shoelaces. Whether you've got a pair of sneakers, classic Docs, or some other basic shoe, using ribbons as shoelaces is a tried and true method to make a rugged shoe coquette.
You can also play around and add a bow on the front of your shoe or even on the back of your shoe, depending on the design. If you have a pair of roman-style sandals with long ties up the leg, it's the perfect pair to use with long ribbons for a romantic look.
Clothes
Almost any item of clothing can be adorned with bows, so let's look at a few basic items and how you can make them stylish:
- A plain white t-shirt can be transformed into a coquette dream if you just take two ribbons and loop them through the neckline and the armhole on each side. Tie the ribbon up and finish up with a bow. You had a plain, boring, tee, now you have a cute one!
- Remember those old jeans you never wear anymore and lowkey kind of hate? What if you took a piece of ribbon and tied it up in a bow and then stitched these bows on the back pockets? It's easier than it sounds.
- If you want an even easier hack, just tie some bows on your front belt loops. You can also thread a ribbon through your back 3 loops and tie a bow. That will create a corset effect that will make the waist smaller, as well as adding a cute bow accessory in the back.
- I'm sure you've seen those cute coquette socks girls have on Pinterest, just peeking out of mary-janes. It turns out they're ridiculously easy to make. All you have to do is take a piece of ribbon and make a bow and then sew it (or even staple it!) to your sock. You can place it on the outside of the sock so it can be seen from the side, or in the back. So cute!
Hair
The power of accessories should never be underestimated, that's a lesson we're going to learn today. And right now, we're talking about how adding hair accessories - and specifically, bows - can cute-ify your fit.
Just think about it - any basic fit will look elevated, cuter, and more visually interesting if you tie up a bow in your hair. Let's take jeans and a t-shirt with a pair of converse, it doesn't get more basic than that.
Now imagine your hair is tied up in a ponytail, but you've added a big bow that matches the color of the tee. Now, isn't that already cuter? And what if you braid your hair, Wednesday Addams style, and plait some ribbons in your hair, finishing up with two matching bows? Or space buns, but they each have a small bow at the back of your head. Not just cute - adorable!
2. Crop It!
Sometimes, there's just no saving an item of clothing, and drastic measures are needed - snip snip. That's right, we're going to crop these babies up, because anything is cuter when it's cropped. Just ask the Y2K girlies.
Shirts
The good news is that almost any shirt can be cropped. Band tees & plain t-shirts are probably your best bet, because they're the most boring, and the most likely to be unflattering. Plus, they don't need to be hemmed, because the stretch jersey fabric rolls up on its own once cut.
The length is up to you, but generally, if you cut around where your natural waist is, that's going to be a flattering length that allows for some visible bellybutton and a sliver of skin with your cute lowrise jeans.
Skirts
Midi skirts are cute, but minis are even cuter. Especially if you have a skirt that's kind of an awkward length, you might not wear it that much. Why not give it new life by cutting it into a mini? This is a great idea especially for those long denim skirts that are going out of style. It's so easy to just take a pair of scissors, measure and mark where you want your skirt to end, and start cutting.
I say denim is perfect for this DIY because you can just leave the edge raw. You can also do this with almost any other skirt, but you'll have to find a way to hem it. You can sew the hem if you're handy, but if you're not, you can tape it, glue it, or even staple it.
3. Reduce, Reuse, Recyle
The reigning motto of any serious DIY girlie, reducing, reusing, and recycling is the mother of all creation - and the mother of sustainability! All you need to do is think about some things you don't wear, and how you might use them in a different way. Let's say you have a cute pair of earrings you no longer use, but still like. What if you made a brooch? Or you put them on a dress? Or on your shoes? How about a bag strap? Can it become a belt? Let's find out!
Use your jewelry as cute shoe accessories
Shoes often feel more limited, because you can't cut them and dye them and sew on them as easily as you can with clothes. But you know what you can do? Take a cute pair of earrings and attach them to the front of your shoe. Or to the back of your shoe. Or to your shoe laces. You can also use bracelets, necklaces, even rings - whatever works to make them cuter.
Use your toys & knick-knacks as purse pals
If I know one thing, it's that every teenage girl - and even some of us that are older - have acquired tons of random cute little knick-knacks. Toys, stuffed animals, keychains, souvenirs and you never know what to do with them. Well, now you can take the whole lot and put it on your purse. Or use them to decorate your school backpack! Why pay money for new bag charms, when you have perfectly cute ones at home? Even the rich and famous are adding purse pals to their designer bags.
Use your necklaces as hair accessories
I bet that right now there is not one, but several cute necklaces in your jewelry box that you don't use. I propose that you use them as hair chains, hairbands, and other adorable hair accessories. A pearl necklace can become a pearl headband, or it can be wrapped around a messy bun for a touch of glamor. A long chain can be snapped into pieces and you can attach those to bobby pins and make cool accessories. The possibilities are endless.
4. Decorate
Just because an item of clothing is plain right now doesn't mean that it has to remain like that. There's a lot you can do to a garment to decorate it and make it cute.
Iron on patches
Have you ever seen a really cool pair of jeans, or a cute t-shirt, or a bag with a million different patches on it with different cute shapes? Hearts, stars, band names? What if I told you it's just a matter of buying them from a craft store, placing them where you want, and then ironing over them? The patches have special glue on the back that melts when you put the hot iron on them. They stick to the fabric and voila - your cute new top!
Cut out + sew
Why have a plain t-shirt, when you can have a t-shirt with a cute shape on it? A big heart. Your initial. A large X. All you need to do it cut out the shape you want from a different fabric and then sew it onto your t-shirt. It'll take half an hour, max, and you've got a new tee at the end! My favorite DIY project is to add heart-shaped elbow patches to a plain sweater. Before: boring. After: cute!
Printed paper + iron
If you've ever felt the pain of wanting a cute band tee or a design you can't have, then this is the hack for you. You can create any image or text your little heart desires, as long as you can print out the image you want.
Your first step is to print your image, let's say a high-res photo of your favorite k-pop idols. Place it on your shirt and wrap it in clingfilm. Yes, the kind your mom uses for leftovers in the fridge. Now place a sheet of baking paper on top of that, and get your iron nice and hot. Slowly, and applying even pressure, iron out the image. What that's going to do is melt the plastic clingfilm, creating a laminated effect for your graphic, as well as adhering it to the t-shirt.
When you're done, the image should have transferred onto your shirt and you've got a cute, custom t-shirt that nobody else has.
