2000's Style: What You Ought to Wear for the Best Aughts Style
•Posted on November 18 2024
The new millennium brought with it a multitude of changes, not only in fashion but in technology, popular culture, and society at large. It’s then hard to imagine that anyone could predict what 2000’s style would be like.
While 90’s style was dictated by music, movies, and television, the turn of the new century saw the rise of the internet and the emergence of social media. As more and more households had access to the worldwide web and as cellphones became a part of everyday life, the way and speed at which we consumed not only news but also trends changed.
Of course, entertainment celebrities still made fashion headlines with what they wore on and off the red carpet. They still set the 2000’s style scene and topped the famed best and worst dressed lists on countless magazines. However, alongside television, movie, and music stars came a new breed of celebrity and fashion mavens. The early aughts saw the birth of reality stars and the fashion bloggers, and their consequent influence on 2000's style and pop culture.
Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie – they were among the big names that disrupted and then dictated 2000's style like no other. Of course, one name in particular rose to the top and has continued to stay at the style summit: the Kardashians. Now don’t worry, you don’t need a momager and your name doesn’t have to start with a K to keep up and dress in the best 2000’s style. Boogzel is all you need for your 2000’s style guide.
1. Tube Tops
When it comes to 2000’s style, it seems only fitting that boob tube can refer to both television shows and to tube tops because, well, tube tops were a favorite fashion choice of many television stars, as well as big screen actresses and artists alike.
The strapless, form-fitting top could be worn with jeans, capri pants, or skirts. Eva Longoria looked far from a Desperate Housewife in a cute tube top and jeans. Cameron Diaz, on the other hand, preferred to pair her tube top with a flowy skirt. Whichever type of bottoms you prefer, there are countless styles of tube tops for you to wear today.
2. Corsets
While similar to a tube top but still quite different, the corset top was also a 2000’s style favorite. Unlike the casual tube top, the corset gives a vibe that’s 100% more seductive and sexier. Whether with straps or strapless, the fitted corset accentuates one’s cleavage and waist like no other.
Silk was undoubtedly the fabric of choice in the 2000’s. To contrast the material’s luxurious feel, everyone from Victoria Beckham to Gisele Bündchen liked to pair their silk corsets with rugged blue jeans. Take a direct cue from 2000’s style and easily pair your own sexy corset top with your favorite pair of rugged denim jeans.
3. Midriff-baring Cropped Tops and Low-rise Bottoms
If there was a body part that got the most media attention throughout the 2000’s, there’s no question that the winner would be the celebrity midriff. 2000’s style would not be complete without a bare mid-section. How to achieve the look? Simple. Either choose a cropped top or a low-rise pair of bottoms or better yet, wear both at the same time.
Kiera Knightley and Rihanna went for cropped tops and ultra-low rise jeans aka hipster jeans. Paris Hilton, on the other hand, preferred a one-sided cropped top with a coordinating low-rise skirt. For Britney Spears, it was all about a graphic halter top and a distressed low-rise denim mini skirt. On stage, Britney took it even further, dancing with a snake wrapped around her neck in an outfit that instantly became iconic – a bralette top and an ultra-low rise pair of embellished booty shorts. You too can easily replicate any of their outfits. Don’t worry, the snake accessory is totally unnecessary.
4. Cut It Out
Another big trend when it came to 2000’s style was to wear ripped clothes or well, clothes that just had holes and cutouts designed on them. Tops, bottoms, dresses – nothing was spared from having holes and cutouts. On some occasions, the entire side portion of a pair of trousers was cutout and held together by drawstrings. Just ask Christina Aguilera. The singer often wore trousers that had strategically placed cutouts, usually along the hips and sometimes, down the entire length of her trousers.
Back in her singing days, Victoria Beckham, as well as Britney Spears, performed in tops that had cutouts at the front and along the sides. The ladies of Destiny’s Child also frequently wore coordinated outfits, including evening dresses, that featured revealing cutouts and slits. You too can do the same with a long, figure-hugging dress featuring well-placed openings along the sides or down the front. If something casual is more your vibe, go for a cutout top and pair it with your favorite baggy jeans or cargo pants.
5. Crocheted Clothes
Clothes with big openings weren’t the only trend. 2000’s style also included clothes with smaller openings or, well, more like holes from crocheted designs. Nearly see-through crocheted tops, crocheted bottoms, and crocheted dresses were also hot designs when it came to 2000’s style. Jennifer Love Hewitt walked the red carpet in a crocheted poncho, while Beyoncé Knowles preferred a crocheted long-sleeve, cropped top. Like them, you can don a crocheted top or you can even choose to wear a full crocheted top and skirt set.
6. Layered Looks
2000’s style was also all about layering. Celebrities wearing one top over another and dresses or skirts over jeans were a big thing. If we’re being honest, we’d probably leave the dress over jeans and skirt over jeans trend back in the 2000’s, where it belongs.
Layering tops, however, is a 2000’s style trend that we’d still get in on. Back in the day, celebrities from Jennifer Lopez to Anne Hathaway chose to layer a knit top over a collared shirt – it’s definitely something that you can still do today. In fact, you can do it right now. In the winter season, layering is a must. For warmer occasions, you can choose to layer your tank tops instead, just like Hillary Duff and Kristen Stewart both did.
7. Pleated Mini Skirts
The pleated mini skirt was a major 2000’s style must-have. In fact, it could probably be considered as the 5th main character in the 2000’s favorite film, Mean Girls, and the 3rd best friend of Gossip Girl's Serena and Blair. Regardless of color, print, or fabric, whether it be a white, denim, camo, plaid or any other color and design, the pleated mini skirt could be worn with anything and everything. Nearly 25 years later and the same holds true.
Wear your favorite pleated mini skirt with a tank top, a hoodie, a baby tee, a slogan tank, a sport shirt, or a sweater. The possible pairings are endless. When it comes to footwear, the pleated mini skirt also goes with everything. From sneakers and sandals to high-heel pumps and boots, you can step out in almost any footwear when wearing a pleated mini skirt.
8. Frameless Sunglasses
There were certain accessories that completed the quintessential 2000’s style ensemble. One of which were frameless sunglasses. The frameless style of eyewear was favored by both men and women alike. Just ask both Posh and Becks. The perpetual It Couple finished off many of their 2000’s outfits with the 2000’s choice of eyewear.
Sleek but far from simple, the frameless style of sunglasses come in a variety of colored lenses and embellishments. Today, you too can indulge in a whole array of frameless sunglasses to complete your favorite fits. Whether you prefer pink wraparounds, star embellished shades, or yellow cat-eyes, you have innumerable options to choose from. Sunshine not included.
9. Belt It Out
Last but certainly not least, there was one other accessory that was a mainstay when it came to 2000’s style. Have you guessed what it is? If you’ve made it this far then we’re sure you have. 2000’s style would not be complete without belts, of course.
Back in the 2000’s, everything was belted… even if it didn’t need to be. Celebrities loved wearing belts even when belt loops were nowhere in sight and even if a belt didn’t actually need to hold anything up or in place. Chain belts over denim jeans, wide leather belts directly over a long top, studded belts over a dress – when it came to 2000’s style, a belt could literally be worn over anything.
So what are you waiting for? It's time for you to choose your favorite 2000's style trends and get everything you need to channel the original fashion and reality stars of the decade.
