best hairstyles for school

Back to school is always an exciting time, because you're going back to learning new and exciting things, but more importantly, you get to show off your brand new outfits. But a full look is not complete without makeup and - that's right - a cute hairstyle! There's a perfect hairstyle for every aesthetic and every outfit, and every hairstyle is made cuter by the right accessories.

1. Dark Academia Hairstyles

While some other aesthetics may struggle to find school-appropriate hairstyles, this is Dark Academia girls' Superbowl. Dark Academia is literally school-coded, so a lot of what you do anyway for this aesthetic will fit in perfectly.

Best hairstyles for back to school: Headbands add the ultimate level of sleek polish to a look. Perfect for fall, and distinctly academia-coded, headbands come in an infinite number of styles and colors, so there's bound to be one perfect for any look you put together. Bonus points for a plaid one in fall colors.

Braided hair is peak academia, so you can never go wrong with one or two braids. But a sleek bun is also the perfect polished choice for back to school. Accessorize with a cute bow or scrunchie and you'll be less "severe teacher" and more "cute dark academia girlie".

2. Y2K Hairstyles

Bet you never thought you'd see butterfly clips come back into fashion, did you? Fortunately, they're back with the 90s and Y2K nostalgia and they're better than ever. hair clips, hair gel, wacky partings - it's all coming back, baby.

Best hairstyles for back to school: If we did one thing in the 2000s, it was zig-zag-ing our hair. Why have a regular parting, when you can zig zag it? It adds very subtle visual interest to a regular, hair down kind of day and sets you apart from the crowd. Butterfly clips can be used to create a crown of adorable colorful butterflies. But that look is very full-on, so if you want something more simple, you can also add them to braids.

Personally, I prefer butterfly clips when they're used in handfuls and they're all different colors, that gives you the effect of being surrounded by butterflies, like a Disney princess. Or Mariah Carey.

3. Grunge Hairstyles / Downtown Girl Hairstyles

Okay, but what if you're a little bit more edgy? A little bit of a bad girl? You don't want all these bows and butterflies, but you still want something cute and appropriate.

Best hairstyles for back to school: The good thing is that grunge is not overly concerned with being polished, so messy, undone hair is fine, and so are grown out roots. But if you want to add a little oomph, how about adding some hardware to your hairstyles?

The downside with hair piercings is that they take some time and patience to put into your hair. The upside is that the effect is fantastic. So you can do something as simple as regular "good girl" braids that you then adorn with piercings and instantly look more edgy.

Alternatively, you can just use them as an accent. Put your hair up in a high pony, and braid a smaller strand of hair on one side of your head, running all the way into the pony. Add a couple of piercings for some hardware. They'll be subtle for school, but still add a little bit of a grunge-y flair.

4. Coquette Hairstyles

Coquettes are soft and feminine, and so are their hairstyles. Your hair should typically be long, softly waved, and the accessories should be delicate, dreamy, and feminine.

Best hairstyles for back to school: After it conquered all aspects of our outfits, the bow trend moved on to hair. A bow can make any hairstyle look cute and aesthetic, and it's super easy to use one to elevate your look. Are you wearing your hair up in a simple ponytail? Put a bow on it. Make sure you leave the tails long for an elegant touch.

But my favorite way to wear bows is to wear too many. Imagine another simple hairstyle, like two regular braids, and use small bow clips all over your hair. If that doesn't scream coquette, nothing does.

Pearls and pearly accessories are another favorite of Coquette girls. They're soft and feminine and they can adorn your hair in any style, whether it's worn up, down, in a bun, in braids, curly, straight, etc.

5. Old Money Hairsyles

Old Money girls keep it simple, classic, clean and polished. They don't overly adorn their hair with colorful accessories - by god, it would clash with their artfully crumpled linen pants and their crisp white button down shirts. Instead, they opt for sleek, pared back hairstyles, minimalist accessories and stuff that isn't too flashy.

Best hairstyles for back to school: A sleek bun is a classic Old Money hairstyle, which can be perfected with practice. A headband can also add that Gossip Girl-esque rich preppy vibe, as long as you keep your hair shiny and carefully brushed.

A big bow is also Old Money, in a very old school, came-on-the-Mayflower kind of way. Rich old ladies who wear Chanel always have a big bow in their hair, it's classic, feminine, and chic. If you're wearing your hair half up, half down, you can also use a smaller bow to give the hairstyle some oomph and visual interest.

6. Weirdcore Hairstyles

If you want to take your space buns to the next level, there's a trick to make them heart-shaped.

Raise your hand if you know where this quote is from: "In case you haven't noticed, I'm weird. I'm a weirdo. I don't fit it, and I don't... wanna fit in. Have you ever seen me without this stupid hat on? That's weird." Obviously, the perfect weirdcore hairstyle is a beanie shaped like a crown. But only if you're Jughead. If you're not, keep reading.

Best hairstyles for back to school: Weirdcore is a very cool, creative, unique aesthetic, so you want your hair to be as cute as your outfits. Space buns are the ideal Weirdcore style, complimenting any kooky outfit. If you want to level it up, scrunchies are an accessory that comes in so many colors and textures, it's impossible not to find something cute you like.

Weirdcore girls love colorful, interesting, "weird" shaped clips and other accessories, so you can fully lean into the wavy hairclips, the Dali-esque prints and patterns, and the intentional clashing of colors and styles.

7. Coconut Girl Hairstyles

The Coconut Girl style is so cheery, happy and gives dreamy vacation vibes, so any hairstyle you choose should compliment it perfectly. A little undone, a little beachy, flowery, wavy, but still school appropriate.

Best hairstyles for back to school: Spritzing some seasalt spray into your hair and scrunching it up will give you a beautiful, mermaid-y, beach-y texture that you can leave as it is, or you can create two simple pigtails, two braids, or one long side braid. A twist on an old classic.

If you want to go super casual, a clawclip with beachy or flowery motifs is also ideal. Just sweep your hair up and add a seashell, how cute is that?!

8. Soft Girl Hairstyles

Soft Girl hair is as cute as their outfit, and it's all about cutesy clips, space buns, pastel colored scrunchies, and other cute or animal shaped accessories. Thankfully, all that is school and age-apppropriate.

Best hairstyles for back to school: Ok, so maybe it's been a long time since the 80s and I know scrunchies were the very definition of uncool until a couple of years ago, but now scrunchies are in, they're adorable, and they're perfect for school-appropriate hairstyles.

My favorite way to wear a scrunchie is to add one the really oversized ones, one shaped like a flower, or a really frilly one. It becomes the focal point of your outfit, and you can go lighter on the makeup and jewelry.

9. Office Siren Hairstyles

The Office Siren look is all about being polished and sleek, which is perfect for back to school. The most iconic hair accessory has to be the claw clip - convenient, versatile, and coming in a wide array of colors and styles, a simple claw clip will stylishly keep your hair tame and it will give you the 00s vibe you're looking for.

Best hairstyles for back to school: The beauty of the claw clip is that if you're pressed for time, you can literally just throw your hair back and put the clip in and you can run out the door.

If you have more time, however, a carefully studied "undone" look can also be achieved. Sometimes, it's as simple as putting your hair up with the clip as normal and then carefully pulling out two face framing strands of hair in the front. What, *this*? I did this in 2 seconds!

As effective as it is simple, the claw clip cannot miss from an Office Siren's arsenal.
