Holiday Style: Dress Pretty for the Festive Season
•Posted on November 18 2024
In the blink of a crinkling eye, the year has gone by and we’re back in the holiday season when our cheeks pink in the twinkling lights. What can we say? We’re in our festive era and as the days get shorter and the air gets colder, it’s time to update our closets, do a quick wardrobe change, and dress in holiday style.
While staying warm is a winter imperative, looking pretty, cute, and cozy is just as important. After all, looking good on the outside is known to keep one feeling warm and happy on the inside.
Thanksgiving, friendsgiving, office parties, holiday drinks, Christmas dinner, New Year’s Eve celebrations – with all the events that are sure to be on your calendar this festive season, we’re here to help you with your holiday style so you can dress pretty for every special occasion, and even for cushy and cuddly days in.
1. Cute, Cozy Knits
First and foremost, the only way to welcome the fall and winter seasons are with open (and well-covered) arms. Long sleeve knits are a necessity when it comes to holiday style.
Take inspiration from one of the cult-favorite shows that delivers quintessential Fall charm and decades later, is still a massive fan and fall vibe favorite, Gilmore Girls. Throughout the years, Lorelai and Rory Gilmore exuded East Coast charisma in everyday outfits that you can easily incorporate with your own holiday style.
The mother and daughter duo favored chunky turtlenecks, argyle print sweaters, printed vests, and floral jumpers. While Rory went for more laidback, Yale student appropriate outfits in jeans and sneakers, Lorelai kept it more professional in trousers and skirts. Whether you’re going holiday shopping, prepping Thanksgiving dinner, hanging with friends, or heading to the airport for a holiday trip, you can rely on cozy knits for a fashionable fall outfit. To complete your holiday ensemble, layer a leather blazer, a denim, leather, moto, or shearling jacket, or a chic coat for added warmth.
2. Christmas Combo: Knit Top and Mini Skirt
Your holiday style will be effortlessly pretty and feminine when you pair your knitted jumper with a flirty mini skirt. There’s a reason why the classic combo has been a fashion mainstay and continues to be an easy go-to year after year. From one of our favorite Friends Rachel Green, to the Gilmore Girls, to Emily in Paris (and in Italy), the television IT Girls of the last thirty years have given their own spin to the knit and mini combo. Not only is the pairing perpetually on trend, it could be argued that it’s a Fall must-wear. Pair the combo with knee-high leather boots to give it a little sexy edge.
3. Prim and Pretty
With the small screen comes the big screen and a movie that has become one of the favorites that everyone feels the need to watch every holiday season. We’re talking about Love Actually, of course. While Rory Gilmore’s pretty Fall style, with ribbon embellished knits and feminine cardigans, continues to be on our Pinterest board, we’ve also added Kiera Knightley’s character Juliet on to it.
Though patterned and printed knits are cold weather staples, you can elevate your holiday style up a notch or two with off shoulder sweaters, ribbon appliques, drawsting details, bell sleeved jumpers, layered cardigans, and pretty pastel colors.
4. Christmas Plaid
Wearing plaid patterns is another way to look extra pretty and feel extra festive this season. After all, nothing screams Christmas and holiday style like red and green plaid. No need to be from the Scottish Highlands to don the famous plaid pattern, just ask Brooke Shields in the movie A Castle for Christmas and Lindsay Lohan in Falling for Christmas. In fact, don’t just take their word (and ours). You can also look to Catherine, the Princess of Wales, Victoria Beckham, Charlize Theron, Jennifer Lopez, Gigi Hadid, Blake Lively, and none other than Taylor Swift who has made plaid pretty all year round, year after year.
Make a pretty bold statement in a full plaid dress or a coordinated plaid top and bottom set. If a full plaid look is not quite your holiday style, make a split decision and go for a plaid top or a plaid skirt instead. Now, if you just want a hint of that plaid prettiness, don’t hesitate to layer on a plaid coat or a plaid scarf. Of course, red and green is the ultimate holiday plaid but any combination of colors work just as fabulously.
5. Home for the Holidays in Loungewear
When it’s mostly dark and extra cold outdoors, sometimes you just want to stay warm and cozy indoors. We don’t blame you. However, staying home for the holidays (or at least some days of the holidays), doesn’t mean you have to let go of the festive feeling and holiday style altogether. You can still dress pretty even when you’re sitting by the Christmas tree or enjoying a mug of hot chocolate next to the fireplace.
Look no further than both Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet in The Holiday. And if you’re staying home, we’d guess that you likely already are looking at them as you watch their holiday classic film. Just like the two ladies, keep it casual but keep it cute with snug hoodies, cable knit jumpers, loose pajama pants, warm beanies, and cozy scarves.
If you’re looking for something even more comfy and perhaps cheeky, go for an oversized jumper or hoodie, baggy pants, a statement jumper, or, dare we say it, even an ugly Christmas sweater. After all, nothing brings holiday warmth like joy and laughter – even when it’s born out of your sweater choice.
6. Chic Christmas
Leave the ugly Christmas sweater at home or strictly for themed holiday celebrations, when part of the joy is in looking humorous. For every other occasion, it’s time to step up the holiday style. Remember, Christmas starts with a capital CH and so does Chic.
Take a cue from the many stylish characters from popular Christmas shows and movies, who made quiet luxury and old money style fashionable even before they became a trend. From Vanessa Hudgens in The Christmas Switch, to Diane Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Claire Danes, and Sarah Jessica Parker in The Family Stone, Cameron Diaz in The Holiday, to Courtney Cox in the Christmas episodes of Friends, and, of course, Catherine O’Hara in Home Alone, you can practically turn on Netflix for a masterclass in Christmas Chic aesthetic. Think striped cardigans, gold buttoned tops, pussy bow blouses, houndstooth patterns, below the knee skirts, tailored trousers, and luxe coats.
7. Celebration Style
In the words of Madonna, “Holiday! Celebrate! It’s time to celebrate and let love shine.” Love (and Christmas lights) don’t have to be the only things shining in the festive season. You too can shine bright in your holiday style party wear.
Of course, you can never go wrong wearing red during the holidays. While wearing a sexy Santa fit a la Mean Girls may be fun and tempting, we suggest you again channel Lindsay Lohan in Falling for Christmas instead. You just can’t go wrong in a red off shoulder dress or a red mini dress with spaghetti straps. If wearing red isn’t quite your thing, try a green or cream number instead.
Just because it’s the festive season, doesn’t mean black is off-limits. You also can’t go wrong in an LBD any time of year. Turn your LBD up a notch but choosing one with feather embellishments or sparkly rhinestones attached. If you really want to brighten your holiday photos and shine for the coming new year, go all out in a rhinestone encrusted top or even a fully sequined skirt.
While the festive season can be less than festive when Christmas shopping can get hectic and holiday parties can get tiring, you need not worry about your holiday style. Just come to Boogzel for everything you need to shine bright in every occasion this holiday season.
