Midi and Maxi Skirts: The Demure and Mindful Trend For Back To School
•Posted on October 19 2024
Trend Alert! Maxi Is the New Mini
I don’t know if you’ve heard the good news, but midi and maxi skirts are back on trend! Mini skirts used to symbolize the epitome of rebellion, but midi and maxi lengths can be subversive in their own way. Of course, this is echoing previous trends from the 90s, the very trendy Y2K, but in 2024, long skirts are getting a refresh and have solidified themselves as staples in our closets here at Boogzel Clothing. And since they’re here to stay, we’ve put together a guide and tips on how to style long skirts and create different outfits for various aesthetics.
What Tops Should I Wear with Maxi Skirts?
When a new trend emerges, there’s always an initial period where we’re scrambling to figure it out. What do you pair with a long skirt? Is it going to look stupid? When it comes to pairing maxi skirts with tops, the good news is that there are no rules; it all depends on the look you want to create. Generally speaking, there are two main silhouettes here:
Pairing a maxi skirt with a crop top or a top that’s tucked in emphasizes your waist and creates a classic, vintage look that makes you look taller. The ⅓ proportions are flattering on everyone and they make for a very traditionally feminine look.
Wearing the maxi skirt with a long, loose top will create a different effect: more modern, more relaxed, and certainly more trendy. Think of it like this: tucking a tight top into a long skirt makes you look elegant, while wearing a loose, long top makes you look cool. Which one would you rather be?
Here are two examples of how you can create different looks with the same midi or maxi skirt by just changing the length of the top:
What Shoes Should I Wear With Maxi Skirts?
I know what you’re thinking: conventional wisdom dictates that midi or maxi skirts must be worn with stilettos, or some type of heel, at the very least. Thankfully, in the year of our lord 2024, that’s no longer the case, and midi and maxi skirts can be worn with virtually any shoe your little heart desires. Chunky platforms, loafers, your favorite sneakers, or even combat boots will all create new, exciting, and, why not - experimental outfits. Yes, you can even wear socks with a long skirt. Your mother will hate it - ask me how I know - but the girlies on TikTok will looooove it.
What Style of Long Skirt Should I Choose? Midi or Maxi?
In this new iteration of the trend, we’ve been blessed with tons of options. That can be exciting, or it can be overwhelming. With so many choices, how do you know which style to buy? Is a midi more versatile? Is a maxi skirt a fresher version of the trend?
o If you want something versatile : A lightweight ankle-length plaid skirt – a hit. It’s easy to style for summer with simple white t-shirts and little tops and will be fresh for many seasons.
o If you want something warm : A warm ankle-length skirt made of thicker fabric – less versatile, but a great option for winter and a nice alternative to wearing pants. It’s easily styled with a winter wardrobe.
o If you want something trendy : A pleated midi skirt. Pleated midis have been massively trendy for the past couple of years, especially plaid varieties inspired by kilts. A tartan pleated midi is quintessentially British punk and Vivienne Westwood-inspired.
Outfit Ideas with a Maxi Skirt
While we adore a micro mini, a maxi skirt is perfect because it can be worn to school or university and look appropriate, while also matching your aesthetic. We've put together some outfit formulas for your inspiration.
1. Grunge Outfits with a Maxi Skirt
Ankle-length plaid skirt + Torn loose sweater + Chunky platform boots + Socks + Modern silver jewelry
If grunge served straight-up is a little harsh for you, you can feminize it with some softer colors. Combine a long, loose sweater with a skirt for a romantic vibe, and balance it with a studded bag and trendy silver chains. Add chunky boots, and some frilly white socks for another touch of femininity mixed with masculinity. Grunge has never been so feminine!
2. Light Academia Outfit with a Maxi Skirt
Earth-tone midi or maxi skirt + Beige top + White tights + Oxford shoes + Hairstyle
Long skirts are particularly well suited to university girlies, because they’re so demure - and some would say, mindful - IYKYK.
I know, I know, light academia inspo is usually full of short, pleated skirts, but you can make a midi skirt very light academia by choosing a plaid patterned skirt, as well as light academia colors, like earthy tones: beige, brown, camel, etc. You can also wear white tights and pair them with very classic low-heeled Oxford shoes. Braid your hair and add hair clips, and you are ready for a day in the library or with a cup of coffee.
3. Office Siren Outfit with a Maxi Skirt
Ankle-length skirt + Simple top + Glasses with a black frame + Ponytail
Long skirts can be perfectly adapted to an office siren, Y2K-inspired style. The base of the look is the ankle-length skirt combined with dark-framed glasses. Don’t complicate the structure: add a simple monochrome top or shirt and gather your hair in a high ponytail to complete the office siren look. Red lipstick is optional.
4. Coquette and Soft Girl Outfit with a Maxi or Midi Skirt
Pastel or light-toned midi skirt + Matching top + Curls + Bow hair clips
The skirt itself is a very romantic item, so it’s the perfect base to build upon for both of these aesthetics. All you need to do is add a matching top to the skirt, curl your hair, and use cute bow hair clips. If you’d rather not go all out with the girly elements, balance out the look with a grunge belt and chunky boots.
5. Indie Outfit with a Maxi Skirt
Asymmetrical midi skirt + Oversized print T-shirt + Sneakers or trainers + Backpack
To create an indie look, don't be afraid to play with shapes and colors. This isn’t a very restrictive aesthetic, so you can get creative with it. It’s all about color and texture. Choose an asymmetrical skirt in a patchwork style, add your favorite oversized printed T-shirt, and bright comfortable sneakers or trainers. Finish off with bright hair clips and accessories that match your style.
6. Fairy Grunge Outfit with a Maxi Skirt
Denim maxi skirt + Mesh top or hoodie + Boots + Vintage bag
Did you know that a denim maxi skirt fits perfectly into a fairy grunge outfit? Add a button-up, a mesh top, or even a hoodie for autumn. Put on a pair of brown boots, and style your hair for a modern fairy grunge look. You can also try a layered maxi skirt combined with a butterfly belt to give it some Y2K flavor.
Can You Wear a Maxi Skirt to School?
Absolutely! A maxi skirt is perfect for school outfits. It’s feminine, modest enough for an academic setting, and incredibly stylish. It’s the ideal item because it lives at the intersection of trendy and won’t-break-the-school-dress-code, and that doesn’t always happen, so enjoy it fully this upcoming school year.
Oh, were you looking for inspo? Here’s our take on a long skirt lookbook:
